It is widely acknowledged that the existing regulatory arrangements for dietary supplements in New Zealand under the Dietary Supplements Regulations 1985 (the Regulations) do not provide adequate coverage for the range of such products currently available.
This policy statement signals high level policy expectations for the production, manufacture and sale of novel foods cultured from animal cells. It sits alongside the New Zealand Food Safety (NZFS) regulatory statement for any business proposing to import, manufacture or sell an animal cell-cultured food product for human consumption in the New Zealand market under New Zealand food legislation.
Commercial fisheries in New Zealand waters interact with non-target species, with some of these interactions resulting in incidental captures and mortality. Captures of protected species are documented by fisheries observers, providing an independent record of the number and identify of the species captured in New Zealand’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). For species with sufficient numbers of observed captures, the observer records and fishing effort data are used to develop statistical models to estimate the total number of captures across species and fisheries in New Zealand waters. This study presents total capture estimates of marine mammals and sea turtles in trawl and longline fisheries for the period between the 1995–96 and 2014–15 fishing years (a fishing year runs from 1 October to 30 September).
Limited information is available on the understanding and preferences of the young, old, pregnant, and immunocompromised consumers on food safety matters. As such the outcomes of this report will be used to inform NZFS risk management/risk communication activities i.e., the development and implementation of strategies/food safety messaging/campaigns used to engage with YOPI.
